Why is cutting down trees on Long Island causing more air pollution?

Air quality

Air quality picture.

Long Island has been losing thousand of trees, those help reduce the impacts of extreme heat and air pollution.

Why it matters: a tree improves air quality by removing harmful gasses from the air and storing CO2, according to a recent report from environmental information newsroom Climate Central.

+ It also absorbs stormwater, decreases flood risk and creates connections to nature that improve physical and mental health, We need take care of every tree.

+ On average, each year New York has lost about 11,000 more trees than it has planted since 2010, per a 2022 analysis by the Sun-Times. The decrease was mostly driven by pests and disease.

[The Big Forest believes that for every tree cut down we should plant one, that is our recommendation to each of our clients, so that we can help stop tree cutting]

WHY REFOREST ?

+ The lakes They are the largest single source of fresh water in the United States and supply water to millions of people in towns and cities. Reforestation helps stop soil erosion and ensures our forests can filter and supply the water we all depend on.

+ Reforestation after disturbances improves forest health. By planting the right species, reforestation helps makes National Forests, towns, communities and cities, more resilient to future challenges like climate change and wildfire.

+ National Forests provide habitat for an incredible diversity of wildlife. These lands provide habitat for more than 3,000 vertebrate species and innumerable invertebrates. Nearly one third of federally listed threatened and endangered species (more than 400 species) are known to depend upon National Forest habitats.

+ U.S. forests offset between 10 to 20 percent of U.S. emissions each year. Reforestation helps sustain and increase the carbon sequestration potential of National Forests, mitigating the effects of global climate change. Forests are also natural air conditioners, providing local cooling effects that help regulate temperatures.
